Emotional Intelligence…..

You’ve heard the phrase floating around alot on this blog. We at Purpose HQ are kind of nerds about it and enjoy geeking out about how knowing your EQ can change the world! However, before we get ahead of ourselves – how about a nice 10,000 foot view of what Emotional Intelligence is and how it comprises the building blocks of your emotional backbone!

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.  When looking at a person holistically, we at Purpose HQ, refer to the head, the heart and the briefcase Method. While strong work experience and academic accomplishments are informative, they only make up the ‘briefcase’ for a person but inform you of someone’s the behavior or core values. That’s where EQ comes in!

There are 8 traits, or imperatives, that are the bulding blocks of EQ. Think of these like a pyramid. Each factor can be measured and quantified – but if any one trait is out of wack the whole structure might come tumbling down.

The 8 Building Blocks of EQ

Emotional Self-Awareness

Sensing and understanding my emotions and how they impact my behavior.

Self-Assessment

To engage in self-reflection so as to determine strengths and limitations in one’s values, abilities and resources.

Self-Alignment

The sense of agreement between a person’s real self-image and the ideal self. It is distinct from but reflective of self-esteem. unexpected change.

Self-Confidence

A sense of trust in one’s overall abilities that leads to poised and secure behavior.

Self-Blame

The drive to consider oneself at fault or inferior, and thus wrong or undeserving in work or relationship.

Stress Tolerance

To endure pressure or uncertainty without becoming negative (e.g. hopeless, bitter or hostile) toward self or others.

Resiliency

To recover positivity toward self and others—to rebound—after setback, difficulty or Self-Restraint- To hold instinctive desires in check and refrain from giving full expression to them in conduct.

How to be more Emotionally Intelligent

An emotionally intelligent individual is very conscious of their own emotional states, even the negative, such as anger, frustration, sadness, or something even more subtle. The cool thing about these traits are that they continue to be honed for your entire life!

So let’s say you want to work on being more confident. Your initial reaction is to just try and be more confident right? Take another look at the pyramid above and you’ll see the building blocks that make up Self-Confidence: Self-awareness, Self-assessment, and Self-alignment. Working on these traits allowing you to literally build up to better Self-Confidence! Of course it is easier said than done, but it does provide a roadmap for a better, confident, more emotionally intelligent you!
